New Belgium - Fat Tire Amber Ale

Posted by John Shearlock on

There’s a lot to like about New Belgium. B Corp certified, employee owned from 2013 to 2020 and the producers of Fat Tire, the first certified carbon neutral beer in the U.S.!New Belgium’s plan is to be entirely carbon neutral by 2030 and they’re heading in the right direction through a gamut of techniques; installing solar panels, creating electricity from wastewater and capturing and reusing heat in the brewing process. They’ve also donated nearly $17 million to nonprofit organisations working on climate solutions and land and water conservation. They’ve even created a tool kit for other breweries to use to get...

Unibroue Maudite and the deal with devil...

Posted by John Shearlock on

The deal with the devil is a story that permeates many cultures. It begins with the German legend of Faust, who traded his soul for unlimited knowledge and worldly pleasures at a crossroads. Then, it is revisited with Robert Johnson, once again at a crossroads, who follows suit in exchange for unmatched prowess on the guitar. The theme carries on with the tale of La Chasse-galerie or "The Bewitched Canoe" as it is also known. Robinsons brewery has been making Iron Maiden beers for yonks and there’s a string of Motorhead beers made by Camerons, the latest of which is an APA following on from the imaginatively titled B*stards lager.  These beers are commercial tie-ins triggered by the bands themselves and, as large outfits with big followings, a market opens up with just the mention of their name on the label. Today’s beer, however, is slightly different.Unibroue Saison 13 is a beer and rock mashup created through an apparent friendship. Unibroue brewmaster Jerry Vietz and Dave...

Bass Pale Ale and the cost of growth...

Posted by John Shearlock on

I was trawling the beer shelves for something to write about and the Bass triangle caught my eye. I’ll confess, I never got into drinking the stuff when I lived in the UK - but the slogan on the label calling it the world’s first pale ale was enough to pique my interest. That seems like quite a claim, and It would be fun to do some detective work and put it to the test but, to be honest, life’s too short so we’ll roll with it for now on the basis that surely someone would have made them remove it...
